Visual Studio .gitignore Template Explained
Why VisualStudio.gitignore ignores the .vs folder, per-user settings, Debug/Release output, NuGet packages, test results and publish profiles.
VisualStudio.gitignore is one of the longest files in the template repository and targets C#, VB, C++ and ASP.NET projects developed with Visual Studio. It covers a wide range: per-user files created by the IDE, output folders for each build configuration, NuGet, test and coverage tools, and caches from extensions such as ReSharper.
A distinctive feature is the many patterns like [Dd]ebug/ that use brackets to match both cases, accounting for Windows environments where casing is mixed. git is case-sensitive by default, so this notation is needed.

Practical notes
- If you need to share publish profiles through the repository, remove the
*.pubxmlline but keep excluding*.pubxml.user, which contains passwords. - If you only work with modern .NET SDK projects, the shorter Dotnet template is easier to read. When you select both templates, the duplicate-removal option cleans up the overlapping rules.
- The
*.envrule ignores every file whose name ends in.env, so give example files a different extension, such assample.env.example.
